"If none of us ever read a book that was 'dangerous,' had a friend who was 'different' or joined an organization that advocated 'change,' we would all be just the kind of people Joe McCarthy wants. Whose fault is that? Not really [McCarthy's]. He didn't create this situation of fear. He merely exploited it, and rather successfully."

—Edward R (oscoe) Murrow (1908-65) American news anchor, broadcast journalist

Lamar Public Library Mission Statement

The Lamar Public Library and Prowers County Bookmobile exist to serve the recreational and reference reading needs of a culturally diverse community, and provide access for all citizens to public information, in print and on the Internet. In addition, the library staff will strive to create an environment within the library that seeks to offer user-centered services and provides programs which help to contribute to the building of life-long learning skills for all library patrons.

Departmental operations include the full range of adult & children’s services:

  • Provide print and audio-visual materials across a broad spectrum of public interests for recreational and reference needs (books, magazines, newspapers, videos, audiocassettes, documents, and cd-rom sources, etc).
  • Provide outreach services/availability of materials to the citizens of Prowers County through bookmobile services and homebound services (including the Colorado Talking books service).
  • Provide access and training to the public in the use of computer information networks.
  • Provide meeting and exhibit space for civic and cultural events.
  • Provide programming for the cultural/informational benefit of the community.

The library will begin working on a new strategic plan in April of 2009. A group of staff, board members, Friends of the Library and citizens will come together to envision the future for the library.
